FLASHBACK FRIDAY!!! Prego!
In 2009, my husband and I went on holiday to Italy & France. We spent most of the time in Rome and took side-trips to Venice & Paris. We chose Rome since one of my favorite movies is Roman Holiday. I wanted to visit some of the places Audrey Hepburn goes to in the movie. Sadly, I don’t remember having champagne while sitting outside of a café. I did drink lots of wine, ate a lot of pizza, pasta and of course gelato. I had gelato for breakfast, lunch and dinner!
We stayed in the charming Trastevere neighborhood in Rome. We wanted to be among the Romans and didn’t want to stay in the touristy areas. We stayed in a bed and breakfast right in the heart of the neighborhood. We booked a room & even got our own private bathroom. It really is a lovely neighborhood. I remember looking out my window and watching the locals go about their business. Parents walking their children to school, the locals on their way to work, the bakeries opening up– just a typical day in the life of the Romans.
The restaurants were tiny and the food was delicious! I fell in love with their Penne all’Arrabbiata. This pasta has a kick to it, arrabbiata does mean angry after all. I love spicy food, so I had this dish several times during our stay in Rome.
Just thinking about the food, especially the gelato, makes me want to go back sooner than later.
If you are planning to visit Rome make sure to visit the Trastevere neighborhood. They have several bars and restaurants in this lovely neighborhood. And remember, “When in Rome, do as the Romans.”
Baci e abbracci!
If you don’t know it yet, pretty soon you will figure it out- I am a huge Audrey Hepburn fan. I could probably write blog after blog about her! There is so much more to Audrey Hepburn than the Givenchy black dress & Tiffany’s.
I was first introduced to Audrey one summer in my early teen years. I grew up in a small tiny town where there was absolutely nothing to do! I spent my summers reading and watching old movies. I would walk to the library at least once a week. Besides books, I was also allowed to check out two movies at a time. The movies the library had were mostly old classics. One of those movies happened to be Roman Holiday. I liked Audrey Hepburn’s character so much that I wanted to learn more about the actress. As I learned more about her, I began to admire her for much more than her work in movies. She was truly one of a kind.
I have so many favorite scenes & quotes from Roman Holiday. For example, Audrey Hepburn’s character recites a poem that I absolutely love:
If I were dead and buried, and I heard your voice; Beneath the sod, my heart would still rejoice.
Wow-that speaks to true everlasting love. If you haven’t watched Roman Holiday yet, you have to go buy it now! No Valentine’s Day plans? Have a movie night with your girlfriends and watch this romantic comedy. Or with your significant other. Make it a theme night with Italian food, wine & champagne! It beats going to a crowded restaurant where you will probably have to wait an hour or longer for a table.
**ATTENTION: Fellow Audrey Hepburn fans, there is an Audrey Hepburn Life Magazine reissue on newsstands now until 4/12/2013. It’s full of photographs by her photographer Bob Willoughby. They seem to come out with a reissue every 5 years because I have the one from 2008. I did not even realize there was another reissue out this year until my mother-in-law presented me with it. **
And so I leave you now with a memorable scene from Roman Holiday:
Princess Ann: I hate this nightgown. I hate all my nightgowns, and I hate all my underwear too.
Countess: My dear, you have lovely things.
Princess Ann: But I’m not two hundred years old. Why can’t I sleep in pajamas?
Princess Ann: Just the top part. Did you know that there are people who sleep with absolutely nothing on at all?
Countess: I rejoice to say I do not.
Brighten up your day with a bright colored handbag! They are a must have fashion accessory. In my opinion, you don’t even have to wait until spring or summer. The winter days are so dreary, so why not brighten them up with a neon handbag?
If you don’t feel comfortable with a solid bright-colored bag, maybe you could go for one with just a touch of color. T.J. Maxx is currently selling these trendy Cynthia Rowley handbags in neon yellow & pink. They have just the right amount of neon color. The color block crossbody handbag is priced at $79.99! If you go to Cynthia Rowley’s website, you will find this exact handbag selling for $225!! The color block convertible clutch handbag is $59.99 at T.J. Maxx and on Cynthia Rowley’s website it’s $175. If you must have either of these Cynthia Rowley handbags,go to T.J. Maxx!
Target also has some reasonably priced bright-colored handbags. They have a crossbody handbag that comes in three different neon colors: yellow, blue & pink. They are only $26.99, so why not get all three!
I already have a bright neon pink crossbody. This year, I think I might go for a neon yellow one 🙂
What about you fashionistas? What bright-colored handbag are you craving??
How was everyone’s weekend? It was such a lovely weekend here in Texas. The weather was so nice & sunny. Perfect for a day out shopping!
I decided to make my way to the local T.J. Maxx. To be honest, I rarely go to T.J. Maxx. Unlike the self-proclaimed Maxxinistas, I just never seem to find anything when I go. Maybe, I just don’t have the patience to comb through the racks. I usually gravitate towards the shoes & purses. Even in the shoe department, I never seem to find shoes that I like in my size. However, this time I was pleasantly surprised with the selection they had available. I found several flats that would be great for this coming spring.
They had a selection of teal colored flats by Steve Madden, BCBG and Lucky. All of them are priced at $29.99.
I kind of liked the BCBG flats, which they also had available in a neon yellow. However, I am not a big fan of the wooden, cork board toe look. I did try them on, and they didn’t look so bad. I just don’t think I can pull it off. I bet I’ll see someone wearing them and I am going to wish I had bought them, well maybe. I tried on all of the flats and they all felt pretty comfy.
T.J. Maxx also had Nine West flats in black & nude. These were priced at $34.99 I tried them on and they felt kind of rough on my feet, not as soft & comfy as the others.
If what you need are some new sandals this spring, T.J. Maxx also had several different brands & colors to choose from. They had black & brown Steve Madden ones. And then these cute bright BCBG sandals for $39.99.
From what I could tell, all of the flats & sandals were available in all sizes. That’s probably because it’s January and they might have just put them out. So if you think you could use a new pair of flats or sandals, make your way to T.J. Maxx before they sell out. Spring will be here before you know it! And remember there is no such thing as having too many shoes, you can never have enough!
Did any of you watch the Golden Globes last night? I didn’t as my husband took over the t.v. to watch the football game followed by “Shameless.” I did however make a delicious healthy dinner for my family.
One of the food blogs that I love to follow is Skinny Taste. Gina provides you with easy, low-fat recipes. She even provides you with the calories and Weight Watcher points. She does not disappoint. Every recipe I have tried has turned out really yummy.
Last night, I made the Cheesy Jalapeño Popper Baked Stuffed Chicken. It’s really easy to make! You basically stuff thin 3 oz. chicken breast cutlets with a filling of low-fat cream cheese, cheddar/pepper jack cheeses, crumbled bacon, scallions and diced jalapeños! Roll them in a lime-olive oil mixture and then in bread crumbs. Throw them in the oven at 450° for 20-25 minutes. Per Skinnytaste.com, the serving size is 2 stuffed breast with Weight Watcher Point Plus of 9 pts., 371 calories.
It was so delicious, not as spicy as I thought they would be. I will probably add more jalapeños to mine next time. What I love about Gina’s recipes, is how amazingly delicious they are! So if your New Year’s resolution was to eat healthier- you might want to visit Skinny Taste for the Cheesy Jalapeño Popper Baked Stuffed Chicken recipe. And while you are on Skinny Taste, you will probably see many other recipes you’ll want to try.
Have a lovely week!
I hope everyone had a great weekend! I don’t know why my weekends always consist of over-eating & shopping 🙂 While I was out & about, I found out the Target + Neiman Marcus Collection has now gone on clearance for 70% off original prices! I was at the Target in Plano, TX and they still had plenty of merchandise! There were racks full of the Robert Rodriguez Dress.
And they have enough of the Oscar De La Renta totes. Which I was not impressed with at all. I liked the style of the tote but the design was not what I was expecting from a designer such as Mr. De La Renta. He should have just left it one solid color, maybe a bright color?
The collaboration between these particular high-end designers & Target/Neiman Marcus did not go off as well as previously expected. Primarily for two reasons: Too expensive for Target/Quality was not good enough for Neiman Marcus shoppers. I really liked the Thomas Browne Women’s Blazer and I even bought it out of excitement. However, after closer inspection the quality was not what I expected for something of that price ($120). I have seen blazer’s similar to that price at Banana/JCrew and of better quality. So I took it back the next day, but now that it is only $38, I might might go get it since it’s more of a reasonable price for the quality of the blazer.
I wonder if this price reduction will help in selling the collection? It was previously 50%, but that didn’t seem to help. Is the collection selling where you live? Did you buy anything or are you planning on purchasing something now that it’s 70% off??
Well let’s hope the next collaboration is a better one, both for us the shoppers & the designer(s).
I want to share with you some of my favorite beauty finds from this past year.
1. MISSHA Perfect Cover BB Cream– We finally started seeing BB creams in the US market this past year. However, after trying a couple of the US brands, I was highly disappointed with them. So I did some research on Asian brands, since that’s where the craze with the “blemish balm” or “beauty balm” began. MISSHA was named the “secret of Korean actresses.” I can’t remember which website I bought it from, but you can find it on Amazon. I use #23 which I was worried would be to light for my Latina skin tone. However, it seems to work and it gives me a natural & flawless look. It does not feel heavy or cakey at all. It does have a “perfumey” smell to it, but once its on you can’t smell it at all.
2. Pearl Powder Mask– This mask is great! It leaves your skin super smooth. One day I noticed a zit/pimple and I used a mask that night. The next morning, there was no sign of that zit/pimple at all! You can purchase this one and other beauty masks on Amazon as well.
3. REVLON Colorsilk Luminista– When I was 15, my parents started letting me dye my hair. I begged and begged and told them I would only dye it once. And I have not stopped ever since! Since I have dark brown hair, it’s always been a challenge finding the right dye for me. However, hair dyes have been improving over the last couple of years. Luminista is for those with darker locks. I love that it’s ammonia free and what you see on the box is what you get, or pretty close to it. I use #168 which is Light Brown.
4. Clear Hair Care– I was amazingly surprised by how healthy & shiny this brand of shampoo/conditioner left my hair. My hair had been looking kind of dull so I was glad to see a change in the way it looked & felt. If you haven’t tried this hair care line yet, give it a try!
5. Tinted lip balm- I am not a big lipstick fan. Oh sure, I get tempted once in a while by a pretty color but then I never wear it. Tinted balm, however is a different story. And this past year, I started using two different kinds you can easily find: Burt’s Bees Tinted Balm in Hibiscus & Yes to Carrots in Rosy Bloom. Both give me just the right amount of tint. And the colors would go great on all skin tones.
I am excited to see what beauty products come my way in 2013! Since I am getting older, I am becoming more interested in anti-aging products.
What are some of your favorite beauty products?
I hope everyone had a fun & safe NYE. The hubby and I welcomed the New Year with friends at the Fillmore Pub in the upper Eastside of Plano. 2013 started off with great food, live music and great company!
Going out for lunch on New Year’s Day has become a tradition for my husband, the kids & I. This year we were in the mood for breakfast so we had breakfast for lunch at Poor Richard’s Cafe. My first meal of 2013 was their French Breakfast- Texas French Toast, bacon and home fries. Not exactly the healthiest way to start off the year but it was delicioso!
Resolutions for 2013? I never manage to keep any-they are meant to be broken after all. However, I do want to focus more on my health. I am turning 30 this year after all. And I want to kickoff my 30’s in great shape.
I hope 2013 is a year full of love & health for all!
Feliz Año Nuevo!!
